Conviction in Fatal Stabbing of Toddler

A woman has been found guilty of fatally stabbing a 3-year-old boy in Ohio. The incident occurred in a grocery cart outside a supermarket, and it all unfolded in just five seconds.

Vionka Ellis, 34, was convicted by a jury on Wednesday for the attack that killed Julianne Wood and injured his mother, Margot Wood, at a Giant Eagle grocery store near Cleveland last June.

Throughout the week-long trial, jurors learned that Ellis targeted the child while his mother was in the process of loading groceries into their vehicle.

With two kitchen knives stolen from a nearby thrift store, Ellis charged at them and stabbed the boy twice before leaving the scene.

The court heard that the whole assault took a mere five seconds.

Little Julian was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately did not survive. His mother suffered a stab wound to the shoulder while trying to protect her son during the attack.

According to prosecutors, Margot was injured in her desperate attempt to pull Julian out of the cart amidst the chaos.

Ellis was arrested on the spot following the violent incident, though she pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Despite her plea, the jury convicted her on nine charges, which include aggravated murder, felonious assault, child endangerment, and aggravated theft.

The toddler’s parents, Margot and Jared Wood, expressed their gratitude after the verdict. “Thank you for your love and support for our son,” they said. “Today was all about him.”

Ellis has been held on a $5 million bail since her indictment last year and is scheduled for sentencing on October 27.

The sentence could lead to life in prison, with or without the possibility of parole.
