Bipasha Basu Reflects on Daughter Devi’s Heart Surgery
Bipasha Basu recently opened up about the emotional upheaval she and her husband, Karan Singh Grover, faced following the birth of their daughter, Devi, in November 2022. Devi was born with a rare heart condition, specifically a ventricular septal defect, and underwent critical surgery when she was only three months old.
Discovering Devi’s Condition
During an Instagram Live session in 2023 with Neha Dhupia, Bipasha shared the story of her experience as a new mother. She recalled learning just three days after Devi was born that her daughter had two holes in her heart. Bipasha described that time as significantly harder than the happiness she now tries to convey and emphasized that she wouldn’t wish it on any mother. Her intent was to offer support to others, as she had found it difficult to locate guidance during that challenging period.
Overwhelming Early Days
As she spoke, Bipasha appeared visibly emotional. She admitted that both she and Karan were initially lost when it came to understanding what a ventricular septal defect actually meant. Those initial days were a whirlwind; although they wanted to celebrate Devi’s arrival, they were overwhelmed by the gravity of her heart condition. Bipasha mentioned that preparing for Devi’s surgery was particularly difficult for Karan, while she dove into research and discussions with medical professionals.
Making Tough Choices
Reflecting on the month before Devi’s surgery, Bipasha shared that she felt mentally ready for the procedure, having consulted extensively with doctors and surgeons. Karan, however, struggled with the impending surgery. She felt a strong conviction that everything would turn out alright, and fortunately, Devi emerged from the surgery successfully. The hardest part for Bipasha was deciding on the right moment and place for the operation.
Bipasha revealed that the surgery lasted six hours, and admitted that the emotional toll was so great that she didn’t sleep for a whopping 40 days and nights. It was, without a doubt, a journey filled with uncertainty and fear, but ultimately one that they navigated together as a family.
