On HBO's “Real Time” broadcast Friday, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) said that citing people involved in birth tourism to abuse birthright citizenship provisions is enough to change the Constitution. He argued that he was only citing “an extreme example” that was worthless. .
Kanna said.[W]We intend to represent America's fundamental values. If you were born in America, you are an American. And when he goes after it, all the Republican lectures are, we support the Constitution, we support the Founders, until they don't. You know what makes America exceptional? The fact that no matter what country your parents are from, no matter what faith you have, no matter what wealth or fame you have, you can go anywhere if you are born in America. And that's what Donald Trump is trying to take away. ”
Host Bill Maher responded: Wealthy Chinese just come here. They fly in and have babies here just to become American citizens. It is debased. That's not to say it's all good. ”
Khanna countered, “This is like the Reagan Welfare Queen. They're taking an extreme example, but are they going to use that as an excuse to change the Constitution?”
