Cryptocurrency’s Role in Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance
Cryptocurrency payments are becoming increasingly significant in the ongoing case surrounding the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, who is the mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie. Recently, Bitcoin accounts mentioned in ransom notes related to her case have shown activity, as reported by several outlets including TMZ and local Arizona stations like KGUN 9 and KOLD. These reports indicated that the alleged kidnappers demanded Bitcoin as ransom in exchange for Nancy Guthrie’s safe return.
On Wednesday, another communication surfaced, this time directed to TMZ, requesting a Bitcoin payment for details regarding the kidnapper. This latest note asked for 1 Bitcoin, approximately valued at $70,000, and it provided a legitimate Bitcoin address.
(Update: According to Bezalel Ehsan Labib, CEO of the blockchain forensics firm Lionsgate Network, payments made to Bitcoin accounts can reveal valuable information about the suspects, as noted in the New York Post.)
Both TMZ and the Pima County Sheriff’s Office haven’t responded to inquiries for comments. Meanwhile, the FBI has kept tight-lipped about new developments in the case.
While the Bitcoin address mentioned hasn’t been disclosed by the news organization, such addresses are visible on Bitcoin’s public blockchain using explorer tools. Payments made to this address would be public, making the origin address visible as well.
However, just having a Bitcoin address doesn’t directly identify the owner. Yet, blockchain forensics companies might detect clues pointing to the individual’s location. Typically, Bitcoin wallets associate transactions with other parties who could have information regarding the wallet owner’s identity.
As things stand, there’s no official word on whether the Bitcoin wallet linked to Guthrie is indeed connected to the kidnappers or if the communications with TMZ are legitimate.
Authorities have yet to make any arrests in this case. A 36-year-old suspect, initially detained, was released shortly after being taken in. He, identified only as Carlos, claimed ignorance about Nancy Guthrie and expressed hope for the actual perpetrator to be caught.
Surveillance footage has emerged showing an individual near Nancy Guthrie’s home the night she went missing. Released by the FBI, the video depicts a figure with their face obscured, except for the eyes and mouth, carrying a backpack.
The search for Nancy Guthrie has now stretched into its 11th day. Her family realized she was missing on February 1 and quickly contacted law enforcement. Indications suggest she may have been forcibly taken from her home; her doorbell camera was damaged, and blood was found throughout the residence.
Following her disappearance, multiple news reports highlighted a ransom letter she received demanding Bitcoin. On one of her shows, Savannah Guthrie stated, “We’ll pay,” addressing the situation alongside her brothers in a follow-up video shared on Instagram.
