Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates: What It Means for Bitcoin
In a development that might signal a positive turn for Bitcoin (BTC) and the larger cryptocurrency market, the Federal Reserve has announced a 25 basis point (bps) cut in interest rates, adjusting the new range to between 3.5% and 3.75%.
Could Bitcoin Reach $100,000?
Kevin Hassett, an economic adviser to the White House and a prominent contender for the next Fed chair, spoke at the Wall Street Journal CEO Council about the possibility of more rate cuts. He mentioned there’s “plenty of room” for further reductions.
“If the data suggests we can do it, I think there’s plenty of room to do it, just as we are now,” he stated. Hassett, nominated by President Trump to take over from Jerome Powell, criticized Powell for not acting quickly enough on rate cuts.
Although the last rate cut in October didn’t significantly affect Bitcoin prices, analyst Michael Van de Poppe thinks this latest reduction could lead to substantial gains for the cryptocurrency. He referred to it as a “great move” for Bitcoin, noting that breaking above $92,000 could indicate positive momentum ahead.
Van de Poppe also expressed belief that if Bitcoin can maintain support between $91,500 and $92,000, it might lead to a run toward the elusive $100,000 mark.
A Historic Decline for BTC?
Market analyst Ash Crypto highlighted that historically, Bitcoin has dropped by 5-10% after the Fed cuts rates by 25 bps. However, he points out that the current market conditions appear different from those in the past, suggesting various dynamics could influence outcomes this time.
Some factors contributing to this optimistic viewpoint include the conclusion of quantitative tightening (QT) after three years. If Chairman Powell hints at possible quantitative easing (QE) in upcoming remarks, it could encourage additional bullish trends.
Moreover, with this being the third cut, there’s potential for more liquidity to pour into the market, which has often positively affected riskier assets like Bitcoin, according to Ash.
