Tensions Rise Between DSA and Democratic Party in NYC

There’s growing tension between the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and the Democratic Party, especially with Mayor Zoran Mamdani (D) at the helm in New York City.

Recently, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, who is a Black Democrat, criticized the predominantly white DSA in a social media post. He stated, “White supremacy comes in all forms,” highlighting some serious concerns regarding representation and priorities within the party.

Richards’ remarks came during an online discussion, where he addressed articles that indicate how far-left Democrats have become fixated on the DSA’s agenda, often overlooking issues that impact minority communities in New York City. In response to a Times reporter, a DSA representative named Farrah Sfurant Forrest expressed discontent about coverage that seemingly neglected contributions from Black members within the group. Richards, however, pointed out that the article had already acknowledged these perspectives, and he leaned into Malcolm X’s quote, characterizing certain white liberals as “dangerous foxes who pretend to smile and show their teeth at Black people.”

Members of the DSA have long set their sights on New York City and beyond. Notably, a report from August indicated that Mamdani’s campaign was seen as a significant opportunity for them to gain state power, a clear indication of their ambitions.

As the elections approach, veteran Democratic strategist Hank Sheinkopf warned that a win for Mamdani would not only signal a shift in the Jewish demographic in New York but also risk allowing radicals to take control of the Democratic Party and expand their influence across the nation.

Despite this, Richards supported Mamdani after he secured the Democratic nomination for mayor in the 2025 race. In a discussion on satellite radio, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) described the DSA’s rise as “symbolic” of the changing nature of the Democratic Party. He noted that the party seems to have been co-opted, driven by the legacy of Barack Obama’s rhetoric, which he characterized as Marxist. Biggs suggested that the Democrats are now facing the consequences of their own choices.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) also weighed in, reiterating earlier comments on his show about the increasing socialism within the Democratic Party being a threat to the country as a whole.
