Directory Shifts to Inclusivity After Lawsuit
A directory based in Philadelphia, designed to connect patients with Black doctors, has changed its name and opened its services to all races following a lawsuit from Do No Harm. The Black Doctors Directory is now called the Community Health and Wellness Directory and is inclusive of doctors from various backgrounds.
This change allows Wurd Radio, which hosts the directory, to consider various factors when adding doctors, focusing on their commitment to serve historically underserved communities, rather than emphasizing their race. They’re aiming for a more holistic approach to healthcare access.
Wurd Radio has not commented on requests for further details on the situation.
Stanley Goldfarb, the Chairman of Do No Harm, expressed gratitude for the directory’s new inclusivity. He stated, “It was no harm. I have been critical of what’s often called ‘racial unity.’ This perspective can lead to mistrust and bias. When healthcare providers prioritize expertise and quality, it enhances patient outcomes.”
The directory intends to assist local residents in finding physicians who provide respectful, high-quality care tailored to cultural needs, as highlighted on the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine’s website.
In recent months, various medical schools have faced scrutiny for allegedly using race to influence diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training, potentially undermining medical education efforts. Some medical accreditors have revised their DEI requirements due to pushback from the Trump administration.
