Former CNN host Don Lemon said on MSNBC's “The Leadout” on Tuesday that some black men support former President Donald Trump because they want to be like them.
“You've spoken recently to a lot of black men who support Trump, and I wanted to ask you about that. Here's what I wanted to ask you,” host Joy Reid said.
“I've talked to a lot of black men who say they support Donald Trump. Who are you voting for?” Lemon said.
After several black men responded to Trump, an unidentified man said, “I think what they're looking for again is why the money they donated the last time he was president.”
“What do you make of that? As much as Trump despises black people, what do you make of black men?” Reid asked.
Lemon said, “As journalists, as Americans, I think we all agree that we should have some knowledge before we go to the polls and declare that we're voting for them. A lot of them said they like him because he gave them their stimulus checks. I don't think that came from Donald Trump. His name was there. It came from the Democratic Congress and Nancy Pelosi. I think that's part of the bravado. I also think that it's an aspiration. Donald Trump is not the devil or anything, he flies around in airplanes, rides in gold toilets, has beautiful women, everything. For men who don't have the agency that white men have in society, it's an aspiration and maybe they say they're voting for him because they want to be like him.”
