Wild Turkey Spotted in California Yard

In Walnut Creek, California, a homeowner experienced an unusual scene captured by their Ring doorbell camera. One weekend morning, wild turkeys were seen bustling up the driveway and squawking at each other. The homeowner remarked, “It was rare to see this behavior right at my doorstep.”

Black Vultures Invade U.S. Neighborhoods

Black vultures have been increasingly spotted in neighborhoods across the United States, causing issues like unpleasant odors, property damage, and frustration among residents, according to recent reports.

Hillsboro, North Carolina, has become a focal point for complaints regarding the foul-smelling waste left by these birds, as highlighted by The Wall Street Journal.

But this problem is not confined to just one area. Vultures have been migrating further north in recent years, leading to a rise in issues like property damage and attacks on livestock. This information comes from the Cole Wildlife Institute at the University of Georgia.

Reasons for the Vultures’ Spread

Experts suggest that milder winters, accessible food sources, and the adaptability of vultures to human environments have contributed to their proliferation. Brian Watts, director of William & Mary’s Center for Conservation Biology, noted that feeding vultures can lead to the arrival of even more birds than expected.

These birds are not only found in residential areas; they often gather around landfills and trash cans where food is abundant.

Watts continued, “When these birds settle in one spot, they end up lingering there quite a bit.”

While vultures do play a crucial role in the environment by consuming dead animals and decaying organic matter, their presence can lead to problems, especially when large groups congregate.

Property Damage and Community Frustration

Watts pointed out that black vultures can cause property damage as well. They might be attracted to vehicles and can damage parts such as windshield wipers and roofs.

Residents have voiced complaints about accumulating waste on homes, cars, sidewalks, and driveways. Some noted how the smell of vulture droppings is quite unpleasant and can deteriorate surfaces over time.

The situation has ignited discussions online, with some users defending vultures amidst complaints. One commenter on Reddit pointed out, “Vultures are incredibly important; they’re nature’s clean-up workers, helping to prevent environmental degradation.”

However, others have observed that vultures tend to appear in residential areas regardless of whether they’re being fed. A user remarked, “There are many vultures living in the trees behind my house in South Carolina, and we don’t feed them at all.”

Some commenters took a more balanced approach, acknowledging the ecological benefits of vultures while warning against intentionally feeding wildlife. One person stated, “Vultures are amazing animals, but people really shouldn’t feed them.”

Fox News Digital has sought comments from Hillsborough city officials regarding these concerns.
