Nassau County Executive Considers Gubernatorial Run

Bruce Blakeman, the Nassau County Executive, announced on Friday that he has received a wave of support following his hint at a possible run for governor. He plans to decide soon whether to challenge upstate Rep. Elise Stefanik for the Republican nomination.

Blakeman, who recently secured re-election, mentioned his interest in a 2026 campaign to succeed Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, just hours after Stefanik formally launched her own gubernatorial bid.

During a recent news conference, Blakeman noted that he was contemplating the level of support he might garner. He reported that the feedback has been largely positive since he disclosed his potential candidacy earlier this week.

“The calls I’ve received over the past 48 hours have been overwhelming, from individuals you might not expect to support a Republican for governor,” he stated.

In an interview following the conference, Blakeman highlighted his decisive victory against Democratic challenger Seth Koslow, successfully securing a second term. He remarked on the overall strong performance of local Republicans in the recent elections.

“From a political perspective, we were essentially the only bright spot in a difficult night for the Republican Party,” he remarked about the Nassau Republican Party.

He expressed confidence in his ability to attract votes from Democrats and independents, identifying this as a significant factor in his decision-making process.

Blakeman aims to make a decision “soon,” pondering whether he would be the best candidate to win the race. “If I believe I’m the strongest candidate, then I’ll definitely pursue it,” he said.

On the same day, Stefanik also entered the race, following months of speculation. She wasted no time in criticizing Governor Hochul for backing the next socialist mayor of New York City, Zoran Mamdani.

Both Blakeman and Stefanik are known supporters of President Trump and have consistently challenged Hochul’s liberal policies, claiming they are detrimental to New York.
