Blaze Bayley Discusses Health Journey After Heart Attack
In a recent chat with Jorge Botas from Portugal’s Metal Global, former IRON MAIDEN vocalist Blaze Bayley reflected on his health two and a half years after undergoing a quadruple bypass surgery. This procedure followed a heart attack that occurred in March 2023. At 62, Bayley shared, “Yeah, I’m really lucky. Heart disease—you don’t see it coming. You feel a bit out of breath, and you might struggle a bit more than usual. Then, out of nowhere, you’re having a heart attack. It’s like, how did I get here?”
Recalling the moments in the hospital, he noted, “As soon as I arrived, they put me in this incredible room equipped for X-rays and examinations. Other patients were there too, and then they realized I couldn’t just have stents; I needed surgery. They had to send me back out to wait for the surgeon.” He went on, “I had a quadruple bypass and I’ve managed to recover well. There was a bit of a setback when I started exercising because of a knee injury that delayed things by about five months. But I’ve got my strength back now, and honestly, I feel more energetic than before.” He also mentioned that doctors found his heart had some abnormalities, with the left side being smaller, causing the right side to take on extra strain. “After the surgery, I really do feel a boost,” he added.
However, maintaining a healthy diet has been a challenge for him. “The hardest part is keeping the weight off,” Bayley admitted. “I lost quite a bit—about 30 pounds—by simply eating better without any exercise. But then, well, I slipped back into some bad habits, so I have to keep trying.” He reflected on quitting drinking, saying it was tough initially but has become easier over time. “On the other hand, giving up treats like chocolate and pastries? That’s just brutal. I mean, I can feel so much better with less weight, but then I think, ‘Oh, just one treat won’t hurt.’ And then, all of a sudden, I’m back to square one. It’s frustrating.”
Bayley shared his thoughts about the food industry and its role in people’s health. “They’re really part of the problem—making us overweight and leading us towards heart issues. I could go on about how the healthiest time in the U.K. was during WWII when rationing led to better eating habits,” he criticized. “Yet somehow, we ended up with factory-made bread being pushed as a great innovation, but it’s really quite harmful. I feel like my heart attack was partly their fault; I didn’t know white bread was such a risk.”
After leading IRON MAIDEN from 1994 to 1999, Bayley has been busy with various music projects since his departure. He’s released several albums, both as Blaze and under his own name, contributing to new works with other bands too. His recent album, “Circle Of Stone,” was released in February 2024.
Bayley previously opened up about his heart attack, recounting how he had been feeling some chest pain, mistaking it for indigestion. Thankfully, he lived just a couple of minutes from the ambulance station. “The paramedics got to my house within two minutes. I was lucky that they decided to take my call before their break. Within 15 minutes, I was getting treated—it was all pretty quick,” he recalled, expressing relief about how fortunate he was with the timing.
Reflecting on the aftermath, he said, “It was terrifying to think about what could have happened if my circumstances were different.” He felt incredibly motivated to get back to his music, not wanting to disappoint his fans. “I couldn’t leave like this, I had unfinished business,” he remarked.
As for future heart attack prevention, Bayley stressed the importance of early testing and exercise. “You’ve got to pay attention to rhythms and cholesterol levels—exercise is critical, yet so underestimated,” he advised. He noted that a mix of inactivity from the pandemic and some bad habits led to his near-fatal experience.
In July 2023, he expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support he received, particularly from fans and former bandmates. “It’s humbling to see people reach out and say my music has helped them through tough times,” he shared.
A heart bypass surgery, or coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), improves blood flow to the heart by using a vessel from another area of the body to bypass damaged arteries. A quadruple bypass specifically refers to bypassing four coronary arteries during the procedure.
