Black Lives Matter leaders have issued an apparent call for violence after Daniel Penny was acquitted of manslaughter charges in the controversial New York City subway chokehold.
The jury told the judge Friday they were deadlocked on the more serious charge of manslaughter, which was dropped by prosecutors to pursue a lesser charge. On Monday, a jury returned a not guilty verdict on the lesser charges, acquitting Penny of the criminal charges.

While many praised the incident, Black Lives Matter protesters spoke out against what they saw as a travesty of justice. Activist leader Hawk Newsom went further with his apparent call for violence.
“It's like everyone else has a vigilante group! We need a black vigilante group! Are people going to jump up and strangle us and kill us? ?! Why don't we do the same when they try to oppress us?'' he shouted outside the courtroom.
“I'm tired. People are telling us, 'Oh, march! March! No,'” he added. “We want you to hold community events this weekend, everywhere from the Bronx to Houston to Seattle to Florida. Black people, hold community events and talk about what you need!”

Penny's lawyers have pointed out that Neely had threatened to kill people on the subway, and that many of those threatened called him a hero after the incident. Penny, a 26-year-old Marine veteran, said he was just trying to control Neely so he wouldn't harm anyone on the subway. Neely was a homeless man who suffered from schizophrenia.
