Edwin Diaz’s Future with the Mets: A 50-50 Chance
Edwin Diaz shared that his likelihood of staying with the Mets is about “50-50.” The free-agent closer mentioned during a discussion on Thursday evening that he’s had talks with the team’s management, although he anticipates a robust market for his services this winter.
This potential market includes the Toronto Blue Jays, who are looking to bolster their bullpen after falling short in Game 7 against the Dodgers. According to reports, they’ll be actively seeking improvements.
Jon Heyman from the paper noted that the Blue Jays might also pursue outfielder Kyle Tucker, which could complicate the Mets’ efforts to retain Diaz. The Blue Jays GM, Ross Atkins, emphasized during a recent meeting that they need to be savvy in their decisions, particularly regarding pitching but won’t shy away from exploring other options.
They came incredibly close to winning the World Series against the Dodgers, but a clutch home run from Miguel Rojas tied the game just when they were on the brink of victory.
There’s also interest from teams like the Yankees and Tigers in Diaz, who had a standout season with a 1.63 ERA and 28 saves in 62 appearances.
On Thursday, Diaz expressed his primary goal of securing the best deal for himself and his family. He noted, “I love New York and want to stay here, but if I have to move, I want to be happy and aim for a championship.” His desire for a winning team remains central to his plans.
Diaz has opted out of the final two years and $37 million of his Mets contract, but the team has made a qualifying offer of $22 million, meaning they would get compensation if he signs elsewhere.
It’s believed that he’s aiming for a deal lasting four or five years, whatever that might entail. “I’m just trying to enjoy my time here with the Mets, but we can’t really predict what they’re thinking,” he remarked. He indicated that his agent is navigating the situation to get the best outcome possible.
