Blue Jays Strengthen Roster with Kazuma Okamoto

The Toronto Blue Jays, who were so close to clinching the World Series, are making significant moves in the free agency market to bolster their lineup.

Recently, they inked a deal with Kazuma Okamoto, a standout infielder from Japan. The contract is reportedly for four years, totaling about $60 million.

Okamoto made quite a name for himself with the Yomiuri Giants, which is basically Japan’s answer to the New York Yankees. He’s aged 29, and not only was he a six-time All-Star, but he also shined as both a hitter and a fielder. He led the NPB Central League in home runs in 2020, 2021, and most recently, 2023.

Since 2018, Okamoto has hit 30 or more home runs for six consecutive seasons, with a personal best of 41 home runs in 2023. He’s versatile too, adept at playing both first and third base, having won Gold Gloves at each position during his career.

A bit of a setback occurred in 2025 when Okamoto suffered an elbow injury during a game, limiting him to just 69 matchups. Despite that, he still managed an impressive .327 batting average with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs.

Looking at his overall stats, Okamoto boasts a batting average of .277, 248 home runs, and 717 RBIs from his 11 years in Japan’s NPB.

The Blue Jays have already signed several key players this offseason. They secured starting pitcher Dylan Schiess with a hefty seven-year contract worth $210 million. Cody Ponce, the KBO MVP, has also come aboard for three years at $30 million. Reliever Tyler Rodgers is set to join for three years at $37 million. There’s a clear hope that the acquisition of Okamoto, along with these other players, will help pave the way for a return to the World Series.
