BMW is recalling more than 291,000 SUVs in the United States because interior luggage rails could detach in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
The recall affects certain X3 SUVs from the 2018 through 2023 model years.
The company Published documents U.S. safety regulators have ordered dealers to replace the bolts on the rear cargo rails that secure them to the vehicle body, and the company plans to notify owners in writing starting Aug. 30.
BMW said in documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that in rare cases the attachment points to the vehicle could be damaged.
BMW became aware of the issue in August 2020 after a “violent rear-end collision” involving a 2022 BMW X3, according to the document.
BMW received legal documents regarding the incident in March this year and was able to inspect the SUV.
The document did not say whether anyone was injured as a result of the issue.
A message was left with BMW seeking comment on Wednesday.
