Bo Nix getting chance to lock down Broncos starting job

After a strong showing in his first preseason game, Bo Nix may be ready to make the full jump.

The 12th overall pick in April’s draft is expected to start in the Denver Broncos’ second preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET, coach Sean Payton announced Friday.

The 24-year-old Nix was solid in his NFL debut against the Indianapolis Colts, completing 15 of 21 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown.

The rookie entered the game after two attempts from starter Jarrett Stidham, who threw an interception on the team’s second attempt.

Nix was listed as the Broncos’ third quarterback on the team’s initial depth chart behind veteran Stidham and former Jets starter Zach Wilson, who is playing the final year of his rookie contract for the 2024 season.

The former Oregon star was said to have had a phenomenal performance during Friday’s joint practice with Green Bay. Fake deployable pump.

Nix had a phenomenal season at Oregon in his final season, completing 77.4% of his passes for 4,508 yards and 45 touchdowns with only three interceptions, finishing third in the Heisman Trophy voting.

The NCAA’s all-time attendance leader chose to attend the Fiesta Bowl game between the Ducks and Liberty, despite there being very little at stake.

Payton and the Broncos selected Nicks as their sixth quarterback in the first round, setting a record for the position.

The franchise is optimistic that Nix, one of the most talented college quarterbacks this century, can bring long-term stability at the position after two struggling years for Russell Wilson and little development for Drew Lock.

Denver has missed the postseason each of the past eight straight seasons – in fact, every season since winning Super Bowl 50 – but is hoping for better results in Payton’s second year as coach.

The Broncos open their season on Sept. 8 in Seattle against the Seahawks.
