Boar’s Head liverwurst listeria outbreak, Letters

worst liverwurst

As liverwurst enthusiasts, we are upset that Boar's Head is offering jobs at other plants and severance packages to staff at the closed Jarrett facility (“Listeria Plant Is Boar's Dead'', September 23rd).

These are the same workers who have been responsible for the deaths and hospitalizations of people in 18 states. Federal inspectors previously found the plant infested with flies, mold, blood pools and trash.

These workers need to be put on the chopping block, along with the USDA workers who kept the facility open long before contaminated meat was distributed.

tensions in china

The possibility of escalation toward war between the People's Republic of China and the Philippines is increasing, in which case the United States may also become involved (“Philippines condemns China's 'floating barrier' in South China Sea”, September 24th) ).

In recent months, Chinese Coast Guard vessels have frequently rammed Philippine vessels in the South China Sea, fired water cannons at them and engaged in hand-to-hand combat.

These events involving Chinese hostilities against the Philippines demonstrate the potential risk of a broader conflict that could involve other countries, including the United States and its allies.

There is no doubt that China, as a rising superpower, will have an impact on the Asia-Pacific region and the world. However, the flashpoint for this potential conflict may not actually be Taiwan, but the Philippines. In any case, the United States must prepare for any escalation.

sex crazed doctor

From now on, we should call Dr. Jay “hypocrite” Varma (“The Coronavirus Emperor Revealed His Sexual Orientation,” September 24).

This person may be a doctor, but I think he is a very troubled person. What he did during the pandemic was inexcusable. He was the czar of the pandemic, but he also hosted sex parties and attended raves during that terrible time. This doctor should have his medical license revoked.

New York City felt like a ghost town during the pandemic. The people of our city did what the pandemic czar told them to do. But Dr. Hypocrite had other ideas. That's embarrassing, Doctor.

Subway dangers

If we stopped collectively glorifying this reckless, dangerous, and deadly act by continuing to describe it as if it were a classic Beach Boys song, maybe no child would die while “subway surfing.” There will be less (“How Did He Get Out?” September 21).

Let's all call it “subway suicide.” That way younger kids won't find it so appealing.

billions in deficit

The MTA is already in a $17 billion hole and is now asking for another $65 billion (“MTA’s Big Demand Authority?” September 26).

Indeed, this agency is an important service to the tri-state region. However, there is a need to monitor exactly where this requested budget will be spent. That can't be just a guess.

We need to study the transport systems of England and Japan. Look at how well-run, clean, and (I'm sure) cheap it is. For this purpose, an independent “transport czar” is needed.

How much can New Yorker taxpayers take on before we are forced to leave?
