Building Bonds in UCLA Football

CHICAGO — Coach Bob Chesney is working hard to revitalize UCLA football, and part of that journey involves forming connections with key figures in professional sports who know how to establish a winning atmosphere in Los Angeles.

His friendship with Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has become significant, to the point that they had plans to hit the golf course together at Lakeside Golf Club in Southern California. Additionally, Chesney has sought advice from Rams coach Sean McVay on managing the difficulties that arise from traveling across various time zones during the season.

Chesney pointed out how the Rams, under McVay, manage their schedule: “No matter where we play, they arrive at 6 o’clock at night. They spend the night and the next day they wake up and play in whatever time zone they’re in. I think they’re going to win 90 percent of the time on this cross-country trip,” he remarked on Wednesday, referring to the Rams, who triumphed in the 2022 Super Bowl.

The connection between Chesney and Roberts goes back to last fall when Roberts, a former UCLA player, advised the committee that ultimately brought Chesney from James Madison. The two shared numerous texts and calls until Roberts gave strong backing for Chesney’s hiring.

Reflecting on their relationship, Chesney said, “That relationship was really powerful for me. Just seeing a top player win at a high level and understanding what it takes.” He admires that Roberts combines competitive spirit with genuine care for his players, something Chesney resonates with deeply.

When it comes to advice from Roberts about re-establishing UCLA’s place in football, Chesney said, “Honestly, at the end of the day, it was about staying true to who I am. I think that’s what he believes in and what he shared with me.” He emphasized the importance of kindness and player care, which he feels is often lacking in high-level sports.

On another note, Chesney has recently developed a friendship with sports icon and podcaster Bill Simmons, who has voiced his support for him since his impressive win at Holy Cross, Simmons’ alma mater. They recently dined together along with a group of UCLA alumni.

Simmons has frequently advocated for Chesney on social media, even sharing a positive article and humorously noting, “I’m not sure I can fully embrace everyone joining the Chesney bandwagon, but I will do my best for the younger players. Thank you for your patience.”

Chesney acknowledges the significance of having a supporter like Simmons, who boasts 5 million followers on X. “There’s nothing wrong with him just pumping us up publicly. It just adds value and keeps the word spreading a little bit more,” Chesney explained. “We’re not super close, but I’m definitely a supporter of his.” There’s a mutual respect, showing that even at different levels, collaboration and camaraderie matter in sports.
