Bob Good says he'll try to block certification of primary results in key city

Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) said Monday he would try to block the certification of the election results in his district’s largest city, as he continues to lose by a few hundred votes to a Trump-backed opponent in the closely watched Virginia primary.

On Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast on Monday, Goode doubled down on his claims of election fraud and questioned the security of ballot drop boxes in the major city of Lynchburg.

“At the end of the day, we cannot certify this election. We have significant concerns that improper conduct occurred in the city of Lynchburg, the largest city in the district,” Goode told Bannon. “The drop boxes were not even locked. There is no accountability for when the boxes were opened. It appears they were left there for two or three days after the election. There is no accountability for who opened them or how many votes were cast.”

The Hill has reached out to Good’s campaign and city elections board officials for comment.

The questions Goode raised about the vulnerability of the election echo concerns raised by the “Stop the Steal” movement, which sought to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in favor of former President Trump.

Goode, chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, and Bannon spoke about the broader implications of election security concerns, pointing to the November election in which President Trump and President Biden will once again face off in a presidential contest.

Goode recently voiced concerns about election fraud, pointing to fire alarms going off at three polling places as evidence of suspicious activity, though election officials noted that no one was turned away from voting at the locations where the alarms went off on Election Day.

“So, Steve, we’re going to block the certification of this election, we’re going to thoroughly investigate any evidence of possible fraud, and we’re going to do everything in our power to make sure that this election actually reflects the will of the voters who actually cast their vote duly and lawfully,” Good said.

“And we will be filing a legal challenge in the coming days to prove that Lynchburg, our largest city, should not be certified,” he added.

Goode is facing off against former Navy SEAL and state senator John McGuire III, a candidate endorsed by Trump, in the primary election that took place last Tuesday. The results are still pending, but the latest vote tally from Decision Desk HQ on Monday afternoon showed Goode trailing McGuire by less than 400 votes.
