Former Senator Bob Menendez Prepares for Prison Time

Disgraced former Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) spent some of his last hours as a free man alongside his wife, Nadine, who herself has a felony conviction. The couple was seen at a credit union in New Jersey just hours before Menendez was set to report to a federal prison in Pennsylvania, following an 11-year sentence related to bribery and corruption.

At 71, Menendez is headed to Schuylkill Federal Correctional Institution in Minersville, Pennsylvania. This medium-security facility, which also includes a minimum-security camp, accommodates over 1,200 inmates and is roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the couple’s home in New Jersey.

Menendez faced sentencing in January after being found guilty the previous July. The charges involved allegations of accepting gifts and kickbacks from foreign governments and businessmen, including cash, gold bars, and even high-end cars.

Nadine, aged 58, was convicted of her part in the corruption scheme in April. Notably, authorities uncovered 13 gold bars, valued at around $150,000, during a raid on their home in June 2022.

Diving deeper into the case, evidence from the trial indicated that Menendez received benefits from Egypt and Qatar in exchange for his political influence.

Nadine, awaiting her own sentencing, could potentially face many years behind bars herself.

Interestingly, Menendez, who had voted for President Trump twice in his first term, is reportedly seeking a pardon as he prepares for incarceration. Despite his repeated claims of innocence, he chose to resign from the Senate after his conviction last August.
