Controversy at Glastonbury Over Band’s Comments on Israel-Gaza Conflict
A British punk duo, Bob Bilan, has sparked outrage at the Glastonbury Music Festival with their remarks regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza. During their performance on Saturday, they led the crowd in chants like “free and free Palestine” and “Death, Death to IDF,” referring to the Israeli Defense Forces.
Following the incident, police have started an investigation into the band’s performance. Reports indicate that authorities are reviewing footage of the set to assess whether any criminal activity occurred.
“I am aware of the comments made by an act at Westholz Stage at the Glastonbury Festival this afternoon,” Avon and Somerset Police mentioned in a social media update. They clarified that the evidence captured in the video would be evaluated to determine if a criminal investigation is warranted.
Bob Bilan wasn’t the only artist criticizing Israel’s actions against Hamas. At a prior London show, another performer, Mora Chara, reportedly raised the Hezbollah flag and exclaimed “Hamas, on Hezbollah,” leading to his arrest under anti-terrorism regulations.
During their set, the band’s lead member encouraged attendees to join in on the controversial chants.
In response to the situation, the BBC, which broadcasts the festival, stated they would not air Bob Bilan’s “deeply offensive” performance. A spokesperson for British Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy expressed strong disapproval of the remarks made by the band and is seeking an urgent explanation from the BBC regarding their pre-performance due diligence.
The BBC acknowledged that some comments during Bob Bilan’s set were indeed offensive and indicated that a cautionary message was displayed on-screen during the live stream, reflecting the nature of the performance.
To provide context, Hamas launched an attack on October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and capturing around 250 hostages. Currently, approximately 50 hostages are believed to be held in Gaza, with less than half of them reportedly alive.
