Controversial Comments from House Candidate Bobby Pulido Resurface

A Democratic candidate running for the House has previously remarked on the issue of police misconduct, saying the U.S. “has a police abuse problem.” Bobby Pulido, a Latin music artist competing in a key congressional district in South Texas, had tweeted back in 2017 that many officers he had encountered were “abusive, horrible people.” This tweet has recently come back into focus.

In his deleted Twitter post, Pulido recalled an incident in Mississippi where he was pulled over for swerving; one officer allegedly pointed a gun at him while asking for his ID. He mentioned that it seemed like the officers were eager to search him, suggesting, “They really wanted to search my jug for money.”

“Bull, oh my,” he expressed in his tweets. “Half of them [police officers] were polite, while others were abusive, even while ticketing me.”

Comments on Police Officers and Justice System

On the same day, Pulido tweeted, “Not all police officers abuse their power, but many do.” He also shared his opinion about the judicial system, questioning its legitimacy after the acquittal of an Arizona officer on murder charges.

Pulido is currently vying to replace Republican Rep. Monica de la Cruz in Texas’ 15th District. His celebrity status as a former Tejano music star could pose a significant challenge to de la Cruz, especially given the district’s predominantly Hispanic population. However, his campaign has been marred by controversies including his connection to a convicted bandmate.

He has also faced backlash after suggesting that “white supremacists” were involved in immigration enforcement to “hunt people down.” His team has dismissed these criticisms, describing them as “lies” and “desperate attacks.”

In a resurfaced 2018 post, Pulido stated, “We have a problem with police abuse,” referencing a troubling video where an El Paso police officer seemed to point a gun at children intervening in an arrest. He expressed hope that police would teach children appropriate behavior rather than resorting to abuse.

Another year later, he commented, “Unfortunately, many people, including some judges and police, turn into monsters when given power. Human nature?”

Reaction from Political Opponents and Supporters

In response to his earlier comments, a Republican National Committee spokesperson accused Pulido of tarnishing the reputation of law enforcement. Criticism mounted as they pointed out that his associations raised a “disturbing pattern” of freeing criminals while criticizing police.

Pulido has also claimed that immigration policies under President Trump reflect “white replacement theory,” emphasizing that the issue is fundamentally about race. “It’s race. It’s always been about race,” he stated, pressing the idea that the narrative around crime often distracts from deeper issues.

Despite his harsh critiques of law enforcement, Pulido has added, “I don’t want to demonize law enforcement,” but also hinted at the presence of extremists within immigration enforcement. “Yeah, there are a lot of white supremacists,” he noted.

Campaign Dynamics

After Pulido was accused of defaming Border Patrol agents, a spokesperson for de la Cruz’s campaign claimed that these accusations reveal a “panic” from the Republican establishment. They asserted Pulido’s long-standing support for law enforcement and expressed confidence in their chances come November.
