Fisherman’s Body Found Off Mexico Coast
The body of a California fisherman, known for his popular fishing videos on YouTube, has been discovered off the coast of Mexico. This comes just days after he went missing following a Mayday call, as shared by his family on Sunday.
Mikey Riabec, who ran the YouTube channel SD Fish and Ships, was found dead in the ocean near San Cristobal Island, according to a post on a GoFundMe page created by his family.
Reports indicate that Riabec was fishing off Baja California on November 11 when he made the distress call from his small boat around 3 p.m. local time.
His family expressed their grief yet acknowledged that they were grateful for some closure. They wrote, “As we begin to process and reflect on what has happened over the past few days, it is clear what was at the heart of the search for Mikey: love.”
The family mentioned that U.S. and Mexican authorities, along with local fishermen, participated in the search for Riabec. The U.S. Coast Guard stated that they are overseeing the situation because it falls under the Mexican Navy’s area of responsibility.
Efforts to reach the Mexican Navy for comments have not yielded a response yet.
In their post, the family emphasized how everyone put in their best efforts to locate Mikey, noting, “Whether they knew him or not, they recognized he was a son, a brother, a friend, a fisherman, and a human being in need of help.” They highlighted the selflessness shown during this difficult time, calling it one of the greatest acts of love.
Remembered as someone who spread positive energy, Mikey’s family reflected on his caring nature, saying, “He prepared us to deal with this. If we follow his example, we’ll not only be okay, we’ll be better.” They believe he lived a life richer than any calendar could indicate.
