Body camera footage has emerged showing the arrest of Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, for allegedly trying to assassinate former President Donald Trump on Sunday.
The Martin County Sheriff's Office released video of the arrest Monday afternoon.
In the 35-second footage, the officer repeatedly yells “Motorist, take two steps to the right,” before instructing Routh to “go straight back.”
Routh appears in frame with his shirt on and his arms above his head, walking slowly backwards towards police, at which point two officers surround and detain Routh.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw said at a press conference on Sunday that the U.S. Secret Service received a report of shots fired from the Trump International Golf Club, West Palm Beach, at 1:30 p.m.
Bradshaw said a Secret Service agent who was clearing a hole in front of former President Donald Trump's compound “saw the barrel of a rifle protruding from the fence and immediately engaged the individual.”
According to Bradshaw, a witness told police they saw a suspect, later identified as Routh, run out of the brush, get into a black Nissan and flee the scene. The witness took a photo of the license plate and through a license plate reader, authorities found Routh and took him into custody in Martin County. The witness later identified the man who ran from the brush as Routh.
Authorities recovered “an AK-47-style rifle with a scope, two backpacks hanging from a fence containing ceramic tiles, and a Go-Pro” from the bushes where Routh was allegedly spying on the president.
According to a federal criminal complaint unsealed in Florida on Monday, Routh had been hiding out in the area for about 12 hours, The Associated Press reported. Reported.
“According to an FBI affidavit citing cellphone data, Routh is believed to have been within the tree line of the golf course from approximately 1:59 a.m. to 1:31 p.m. Sunday, highlighting the high level of planning involved,” the news outlet reported.
