Pam Bondi criticized Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation into President-elect Trump as “terrible,” but declined to say whether she would investigate the special counsel.
“I haven't seen that file. I haven't seen the investigation. It's irresponsible, I promise you,” she said during her confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
But she faced pushback from the questioner, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who criticized Smith's investigation.
“Senator, what I saw on the news was terrible.”
While Bondi dismissed previous questions about possible prosecution as hypothetical, Schiff said the case was “very specific and not hypothetical.”
“The president said Jack Smith should be in prison,” Schiff said.
Bondi has previously criticized the investigation into Trump.
“The Department of Justice, the prosecutors are going to be indicted, they're the bad guys,” Bondi said in a 2023 Fox News appearance. “Investigators will be questioned.”
Mr. Bondi's comments came a day after Mr. Smith released his final report on Mr. Trump's efforts to prevent a peaceful transfer of power. In the book, Smith defended his work, saying the accusations against Trump were legitimate and not political, calling such accusations “ridiculous.”
