Boomer Esiason believes Derek Jeter is not being truthful about the reason for Yankees Old-Timers' Day.

Boomer Esiason Responds to Derek Jeter’s ‘Elitist’ Comments

Boomer Esiason expressed his frustration over Derek Jeter labeling him as “elitist” for not attending this year’s Yankees’ old-timers’ day, prompting a reaction from hosts at WFAN.

Jeter mentioned that he missed the event, which celebrated the Yankees’ 2000 World Series team, due to his daughter’s birthday party. However, Esiason seems to doubt that explanation. “There’s something off about this whole story,” he said on his Tuesday morning show, “Boomer and Gio.” He added, “I think something is happening, but maybe I’m not seeing the full picture. Or I could be wrong.”

This comment came after WFAN co-host Tiki Barber noted that Jeter appeared irritated with Esiason’s skepticism. Esiason previously claimed that despite Jeter not providing specific reasons for skipping the event, he received an email hinting at the true reason.

Scheduled for August 9, the old-timers’ day will feature the first real game since 2019. Esiason had previously mentioned on air that Jeter’s absence felt like a “bit of a shaming.” He noted, “I think he should be there; he should be part of it. It feels elitist to me,” referencing legends like Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio who participated in past events.

Barber mentioned that he spoke with Jeter during a Hall of Fame celebration for CC Sabathia, where Jeter showed his annoyance. “[Jeter said] ‘He should have called me,'” Barber recalled, “Don’t speculate about me. Talk to me.” Barber had to calm him down afterward.

Esiason, on the other hand, clarified that he hasn’t reached out to Jeter yet, suggesting that perhaps it’s up to Jeter to discuss his feelings regarding the comments rather than avoiding the conversation.
