Boomer Esiason Criticizes China's Eileen Gu: 'She's Unbearable'

Boomer Esiason Critiques Olympian Irene Gu

WFAN host and former NFL player Boomer Esiason expressed his thoughts on Irene Gu, an Olympian who was born in the United States but chose to compete for China. He described her as “good-looking” but “totally intolerable.”

Gu has had considerable success competing against the American team, even winning silver medals for China. However, Esiason seems to have reached his limit. According to reports, he said on his radio show, “She’s a very attractive woman, very intelligent. She went to Stanford University. But if you listen to the interviews after she joined, she’s unbearable. It’s hard to hear. But again, this is an individual sport, and it’s about an individual talking about herself rather than her teammates and the support she has.”

Gu is seen as one of the more controversial figures at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

In her defense, she noted that there aren’t many young girls interested in skiing in China and that the U.S. “already has representation” in this area. She expressed her desire to inspire other Chinese girls to take up skiing.

While she refrains from criticizing China for its poor human rights record or treatment of the Uyghur minority, she has voiced criticism toward the United States.

Recent reports mention that Gu reacted to remarks made by President Donald Trump regarding Team USA freestyle skier Hunter Hess, who expressed some reservations about wearing Team USA gear. Hess also indicated he wasn’t a “biggest fan” of what was happening in the U.S. Gu felt Trump’s comments on Hess were inconsistent with the spirit of the event.

Additionally, Gu recently claimed that she was a victim of “assault,” “robbery,” and “hate” while studying at Stanford in 2022. These allegations have not been publicly addressed by her before, and although at least one news outlet tried to verify her claims, they found no supporting evidence.
