After 36 years, the New York Yankees have welcomed a new full-time radio play-by-play announcer. Dave Sims, who previously worked with the Seattle Mariners, retired early in the 2024 season, which created a spot previously filled by the long-standing John Sterling. Sterling had been a fixture since 1989, missing just a handful of games through the years, mainly due to personal circumstances.
Sims missed the recent Yankees series against the Athletics while spending time with family in Seattle. His absence caught the attention of Boomer Esiason, a well-known host on the Yankees radio network. Esiason expressed some concern: “Sterling didn’t take time off like this,” he commented, questioning Sims’ decision to miss games. “It should be a lifelong role for you.” He added, “You just don’t miss Yankee games.” Though Esiason stressed his admiration for Sims, he seemed perplexed by the choice to step away so soon in his new role.
Esiason’s reaction may stem from his own experiences, as he often juggled demanding travel schedules while commenting on NFL games and hosting shows back in New York. He recalled those hectic nights of flying in just in time for broadcasts, implying that committing to the Yankees is important. Last season, the Yankees circulated a number of announcers but ultimately settled on Sims for this year.
As the Yankees get ready to face the Mariners, Sims will take his position in the visitors’ broadcast booth starting Monday night.
