Boston Bruins players apologize for Trump phone call: 'Definitely regretful' — 'we should have responded differently'

Bruins Players Respond to Controversial Trump Call

Two players from the Boston Bruins, who recently represented the United States in the 2026 Olympics, are feeling the pressure from the media following their phone call with President Trump.

Members of the gold medal-winning USA men’s hockey team are facing scrutiny, especially after local reporters questioned their laughter during the president’s jokes.

“It certainly doesn’t reflect our feelings regarding them or their achievements,” one player mentioned, speaking to the media.

After a 2-1 victory against Canada, Trump called the men’s locker room, extending an invite to the State of the Union and mentioning the women’s team. He joked that failure to invite them might lead to his impeachment.

In the wake of the call, some players have begun to express regret over their laughter. Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman was among the first to show remorse, stating that while he felt incredibly honored to attend the State of the Union, the team should have reacted differently to the call.

“I should have reacted differently,” Swayman remarked from the locker room. He emphasized their respect for the women’s team, saying, “Sharing the gold medal with them is something we will always be grateful for.”

In returning home, Swayman reflected on the shared experience with pride, mentioning the incredible support from the United States.

Additionally, defenseman Charlie McAvoy, a 28-year-old from New York, echoed similar sentiments. “I’m certainly sorry for how we reacted in that moment,” he said, noting how quickly things transpired.

He highlighted that their relationship with the women’s team is strong and asserted that their laughter “does not reflect how we view them or their achievements.” McAvoy expressed that he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit the White House, given its historical significance.

Trump’s comments have puzzled sports reporters, prompting them to seek reactions from both male and female athletes. Meanwhile, Team USA women’s captain Hilary Knight responded by stating the backlash is a valuable lesson, labeling the president’s joke as “disgusting and unfortunate.” She criticized the men’s players for their poor judgment in laughing at Trump’s remarks.
