Boston's Democratic mayor Michelle Wu has taken heat from local leaders to double the liberal sanctuary laws, claiming that “we stand with immigrants.”
Wu previously said that Boston would not cooperate with US immigration and customs enforcement businesses.
“No one tells Boston how to care for us ourselves, not the king. They are not the presidents that we think are kings. Boston was born of a bully,” she said in her speech.
“You belong here,” she told immigrants.
Wu's speech infuriated conservative local leaders who opposed protection of illegal immigrants from the ice, claiming they put Bostonians at risk.
Massachusetts GOP spokesman Logan Trupiano He told Fox News It says, “There is no good reason for her to get in the way of this important advance.”
“Mayor Wu has to move beyond fear, ice and the false characteristics of federal authorities,” he said.
“The city's sanctuary policy has led to dangerous individuals returning to our community, undermining the trust and security of the people,” added Tolpiano.
Tolpiano said Wu hadn't spoken about the 650,000 residents of Boston, noting the surge in arrests of illegal immigrant child sex predators and other criminals in the area.
“Ice has arrested child predators, drug dealers and gun runners. He is responsible for the heinous crimes that threaten public safety,” Tolpiano said. “Given the recent arrests by ICE in Massachusetts and Boston, it's difficult to understand why Mayor Wu continues to oppose the Trump administration's efforts.”
Former Immigration Judge and policy expert at the Center for Immigration Studies, Andrew Arthur told the outlet that WU's policies pose a risk to citizens and pose a threat to the safety of the immigrant communities she has vowed to protect.
“Sanctuary Policy In reality, we know that officers will not hand those people over to the ice, so we will hurt people in the sanctuary, immigrant community and bring them back on the streets,” Arthur said.
“They don't want to move forward [to report crimes]because they are afraid they will oppose it,” he explained.
Arthur added that she and other sanctuary city leaders actually have “created… sanctuaries for criminals.”
