Boston news anchor Kate Merrill abruptly quits WBZ-TV job

A popular Boston morning show host and wife of a former New York Rangers goaltender has left viewers confused when she suddenly and without explanation left her longtime job.

Kate Merrill, an Emmy Award winner who worked at CBS affiliate WBZ-TV for more than 20 years, has not been on the air in recent weeks, according to multiple reports.

Meryl, who is married to Mike Dunham, has not commented on her departure.

Dunham, who also played for the Islanders and Devils during his 20-year NHL career, currently serves as the goaltender development coach for the Boston Bruins.

“Kate has decided to leave WBZ.” The television station reported the news to The Boston Globe. “Thank you for reaching out. We value our loyal viewers.”

The reason for her departure was not disclosed.

The Post has reached out to Merrill Lynch and WBZ-TV for comment.

Merrill began her career at WBZ-TV in 2004 and joined the network’s morning show in 2017.

Prior to being hired by WBZ-TV, she worked as a reporter for a year at WNBC-TV, the NBC affiliate in New York.

A native of Carlisle, Massachusetts, Merrill has won multiple Emmy Awards for her reporting at WBZ-TV.

She has covered high-profile events in Boston, including the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and events after the Red Sox and Patriots won the World Series and Super Bowl, respectively.

In March, Merrill celebrated her 20th anniversary at WBZ-TV.

Meryl’s fans posted messages of support for her on her public Facebook page, which boasts 12,000 followers.

“I hope you left of your own volition and not CBS moving in another direction!” one person wrote.

“I think I need to switch networks. If you go somewhere else or decide what you’re going to do, please let me know.”

“Once Kate is gone I am officially leaving WBZ,” another fan wrote. “A year ago WBZ was the best morning team and now… Goodbye WBZ.”

The station has seen several high-profile departures in recent weeks and months.

Liam Martin He wrote an essay for Boston Magazine. In March, he said he had to leave his “dream job” as an anchor at WBZ-TV because of mental health issues including obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety and depression.

In September, the network’s weather forecaster Zach Green left the morning show without explanation.

He later posted on social media that management had informed him that “the show will be moving in a new direction.”
