A few weeks back, the Boston Red Sox were among the biggest disappointments in Major League Baseball. With hefty salaries and a lineup packed with stars and promising young talent, injuries severely impacted their performance in the first half of the season. By July, they found themselves at the bottom of the American League East with a record of 37 wins and 48 losses. Sitting 14 games out of first place, they looked poised to make some trades before the deadline. On June 21, analytics suggested they had only an 8.4% chance of reaching the playoffs, according to FanGraphs.
Then, something incredible happened.
Red Sox Surge into Playoff Contention
In an impressive turnaround, the Red Sox achieved a remarkable 14-game winning streak just as they were headed into a day-night doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles. Even with key players like Garrett Crochet, Trevor Story, and Roman Anthony sidelined, the team found its rhythm, jumping to a decisive lead they maintained throughout the game, thanks in part to outstanding defense from shortstop Tsunchae Chung.
This streak not only matched a franchise record set 80 years ago but also marked the eighth occasion since 1961 that the Red Sox have won 15 or more games consecutively, the first instance since 2021 when the St. Louis Cardinals accomplished it.
Caleb Durbin, an infielder, remarked on the growing excitement as they edged closer to playoff contention. “When you keep winning and you get closer and closer, it feels like the playoffs,” he noted. Reflecting on the team’s history, he added, “It’s pretty incredible.”
Narrow Miss for a New Record
During a recent game, the Red Sox had a shot at setting a new franchise record with 16 straight wins. They were back at Fenway Park against a struggling Orioles team when unexpectedly, the Orioles made a strong comeback, scoring four runs right in the first inning. Unfortunately, Eduardo Rivera’s early ejection in that inning dampened the Red Sox’s momentum, and they ended the game with just one win against five losses, missing the chance to make history.
Still, this shift in their performance has been remarkable. They’ve transformed not just their season but also the landscape of the American League East and the postseason race. From July 1 to July 22, they were unbeatable, despite being buried in the standings earlier.
Before the recent loss, Boston’s postseason prospects had exploded to 67 percent, further bolstered by their sweep of the AL’s third wild-card spot. A win in the earlier game had placed them merely six games behind first place in the AL East, but a loss left them seven games back as they moved into Thursday.
From Sellers to Buyers?
Looking ahead, Crochet hopes to be back for the playoffs, and the team is eager for more starting pitching even if Ranger Suarez returns. Roman Anthony remains out after suffering a finger ligament injury, and Trevor Story’s return is still uncertain, creating a bit of an urgency for Boston to explore options.
The big question now is how they accomplished such a feat with numerous injuries. A blend of timely hitting, solid pitching, and just a touch of luck seems to be the recipe. In July, the Red Sox recorded the best team ERA in baseball and boasted an impressive .877 OPS with runners in scoring positions. Things certainly seemed to click.
A Promising Future
A 15-game winning streak is certainly impressive, particularly with the roster challenges they’ve faced. Fans can confidently dream of getting Anthony, Story, and Suarez back in time for the playoffs. As they look ahead, Crochet’s return adds another layer of optimism. Not a bad spot for the Red Sox as July moves forward.
