Nuclear Power Support Growing Among Americans
According to a recent Pew Research Center poll published on Thursday, nearly 60% of Americans now favor expanding nuclear power as a source of electricity. This marks an increase from 43% in 2020, with support rising across both political parties in the last few years. The report highlights that concerns over nuclear waste are still significant, yet growing energy prices and looming energy crises have intensified interest in this resource, particularly as leaders, including former President Donald Trump, work to bolster energy assets.
Respondents cited various reasons for their support—citing the efficiency, economic advantages, safety, and the carbon-free aspect of nuclear power. For instance, one participant mentioned that nuclear plants are currently “the only form of carbon-free power generation that can efficiently produce large amounts of electricity without being dependent on weather conditions.” They described it as a clean energy source offering significant returns for the investment of time and money.
Another person emphasized safety, recalling military applications like submarines: “We’ve really learned how to manage nuclear power safely. It’s clean, and waste disposal is manageable.”
The poll, conducted in April and May, reveals a gradual increase in bipartisan support for nuclear energy, although Republicans continue to show stronger backing for its expansion. Notably, 44% of those opposing nuclear power pointed to safety concerns as their primary issue. Interestingly, the partisan divide on nuclear energy appears narrower compared to other energy sources like offshore oil drilling or coal mining.
Furthermore, the poll highlighted that while many Americans favor solar and wind technologies—77% and 68% respectively—support for these renewable sources has waned since 2020, particularly among Republicans.
Former President Trump had signed several orders aimed at promoting nuclear energy in the U.S., declaring a national energy emergency. Some Democratic lawmakers are also advocating for expanded nuclear opportunities, despite recent turbulence affecting major nuclear plants. This includes support from leaders like New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
