We are still very much in the honeymoon phase of 2024-25: after a few dates, there has been a few butterflies, a couple of nervous but excited glances and all that we know at this stage is that we are excited to know more. And in the cases of Bournemouth and Southampton, there is plenty of learn: the home side are still readjusting replacing one expensive striker (Dominic Solanke) with another (Evanilson), as well as a new goalkeeper between the sticks (Kepa), while Southampton are becoming a social experiment into how brave/stupid one football team can be in continuing to play out from the back. The Saints may still be the bookies’ favourites to be relegated, but they came awfully close to their first win of the season last time out against Ipswich – have they turned a corner?

This may not be a traditional ripsnorter of a fixture/date, or particularly romantic, but there is plenty to keep us interested. Just don’t call Bournemouth v Southampton a derby.

tyler dibling That's Southampton's biggest secret. The 18-year-old winger looks a bit special, and not just because he wears his socks lower than Jack Grealish. Dibling scored a brilliant goal in the 1-1 draw with Ipswich after receiving a great pass from Adam Lallana, and also won a penalty in the defeat to Manchester United. I'm really looking forward to seeing him tonight.
As for Manchester Unitedthis is worth reading:
graham potterThe former Brighton and Chelsea manager, who will be Sky Sports' guest pundit on tonight's MNF, has just done a very poor job of distancing himself from England's permanent vacancy, with Lee Carsley currently the caretaker manager. It's nothing more than that.
There are also questions about whether he has held talks with Manchester United.
I would take all media reports with a pinch of salt. I seem to be the only manager to have moved to Stoke City and Napoli in the same week. I've had many conversations with many people. I would like to keep such conversations private.
Southampton have won just one point from their first five games.despite having an average of 60% possession across those matches. What's reassuring for Saints fans is that only two teams in Premier League history have averaged more than 50% of possession: Bobby Martinez's Wigan in 2012-13 and Steve Bruce's team. Birmingham 2005-06 season.
This suggests Southampton's problem is not the system. But it's still early days. This was a big game for them and Russell was no doubt targeting it as a rare away game where they had a very good chance of winning.
It is no exaggeration to say that Russell Martin's Southampton team are phenomenal tonight. There are no strikers, but there are five on the bench and only one defender. Will 5ft 4in Scottish dynamo Ryan Fraser lead the line? Or maybe Maxwell Cornet, who is on loan from West Ham? He has not started a Premier League game since January but was included in tonight's squad. Aaron Ramsdale, perhaps not too surprisingly, will start against his former team.
Bournemouth have tinkered with a few things since the defeat at Anfield, but their eleven is pretty much as expected. Tonight, Adam Smith will join Araujo and captain Bournemouth's squad. What a great servant the English player has been to the club. Meanwhile, Evanilson is still chasing his first goal for the Cherries.
