Bowen Yang, a former “Saturday Night Live” cast member, and comedian Matt Rogers have recently faced backlash after remarks suggesting that financial support for Texas firefighter Jasmine Crockett is not advisable.
This discussion occurred in their latest podcast episode of “Las Culturistas,” which aired Thursday, and was met with immediate criticism from some progressive listeners.
Rogers, 35, stated, “Whenever a politician reveals too much about themselves, I’m done with it. Don’t waste your money sending it to Jasmine Crockett…just stop.” Yang agreed with him.
Rogers went on to express regret about supporting Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential run, calling himself “so stupid” for being a “Hillary Stan.”
The comments ignited a wave of discontent from supporters of Crockett. Some social media users called for the podcasters to refrain from mentioning her name, with one influencer remarking that they had “discarded two podcasters.”
Another user expressed their anger, stating that the comments prompted them to donate to Crockett’s campaign, going so far as to say “Fk Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang.”
In response to the criticism, Rogers took to Instagram, emphasizing that he values feedback. He said, “Transparency and candor are important to me, especially on my podcast. I’m a progressive who cares about winning elections, but my wording wasn’t accurate.”
He expressed admiration for Crockett and noted that Democrats should focus on winning elections. Rogers apologized for any misunderstanding his words may have caused.
Yang shared Rogers’ statement, adding his own commitment to being more thoughtful in the future, acknowledging that they needed to take their platform more seriously.
Crockett, who has made headlines for her own controversial statements, announced her candidacy for the Democratic Senate nomination in December. In an interview, she described some Black and Hispanic Trump voters as having a “slave mentality.”
Crockett has also criticized President Trump, labeling him a “dictator” and “enemy of the United States” during a segment on MSNBC, asserting that those who support him are among the “most unpatriotic people” in the country.
