Boy, 12, dies after falling into swift-moving Utah river while vacationing with family

A 12-year-old boy died in Utah after falling into a river on Saturday and being swept several miles downstream, authorities said.

According to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, the boy from Arizona was vacationing with his family near Bridal Veil Falls when he fell into the swollen Provo River around 1:45 p.m.

Multiple agencies were searching for the boy, who was seen at multiple points along the river. FOX13 Salt Lake City report.

According to the sheriff’s office, one of the rescuers spotted the boy and jumped into the river to try and save him, but was unsuccessful.

Authorities said the rapids were carrying the boy at 10 to 12 miles per hour. KUTV reported.

The boy was pulled from the river near Orem, about four miles downstream from where he fell, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office initially said the boy had been rescued, but later updated the department to say he had died at the hospital.

The child’s identity has not yet been released.

Utah officials warned of high and fast-flowing waters on the Provo River and advised visitors to stay away from the water.

“The Provo River is currently flowing very fast throughout the county,” the Provo Police Department said in a social media post. “It is extremely dangerous to play in the area. Please stay away and consider alternative locations until flows return to normal. If you are visiting parks or trails along the Provo River, please stay at least 40 feet from the riverbank.”

The Bureau of Reclamation on Friday issued a “Level 1 Emergency” warning about high water levels from Deer Creek Dam and warned that minor flooding was possible along the Provo River in the coming days.
