The body of a 6-year-old boy who was a “hero” who was trying to protect his younger brother from a blaze in Virginia has been found, according to his father. His father proudly said his sons’ “big hearts” are donated to help others.
William Bryce and his 3-year-old brother Zachariah were at home with their grandparents and his 8-year-old brother Logan when the mansion went up in flames on April 10. Father James Bryce told People.
Logan and his grandparents survived, but William and Zachariah were found side by side and pronounced dead four days later.
“When William and Zach were found, they said William was actually covering Zachariah like a shield and protecting him,” their father said.
“I knew that was his character because that’s who he is. He’s a hero in his own right.”
The two boys had a special bond, James added.
“Zakaria was always following William everywhere, and William was very proud. He was telling everyone, ‘That’s my brother,'” he explained.
James and the boys’ mother, Rayna, were at work when the fire broke out. Their eldest son, 13-year-old Seth, was working with his mother.
After William and Zachariah were found huddled together, unresponsive for 45 minutes, their family continued to pray for their safety.
“We were scared to death. When they told us that our two children were really sick and really hurting, we panicked and just started praying,” James said. said.
But sadly both boys were declared brain dead due to the effects of smoke inhalation. The two were side by side at the hospital when they were finally pronounced dead on April 14th.
“It was really painful because we could still see the heartbeat. In the end, there was no response even after tests were taken and there was nothing we could do on our own,” the grieving father added.
Last Thursday, Children’s National Hospital held a tearful honor walk for William and Zachariah, who were taken to the operating room to donate their organs. Video from WUSA9 displayed.
The newspaper reported that the young people would save up to nine lives.
“Hopefully their hearts will continue and the recipients will continue to have that big heart,” James Bryce said.
William and Zachariah will be honored with a celebration of life this Saturday at their family’s church in Springfield. Added WUSA9.
Participants are asked to wear green or blue, the boys’ favorite colors, or to participate as a character, a superhero, or an NFL player.
“It’s been dark and evil, but we’re not running away from it. We’re finding some purpose because we want to shine a light and help people who are hurting.” James spoke of his family’s ongoing grief.
“What is here today may be gone tomorrow. Enjoy every moment and tell your children and your family that you love them.”
