Brad Lander Launches Congressional Campaign with Mayor-Elect Support

New York City Comptroller Brad Lander kicked off his congressional campaign Wednesday morning, garnering early endorsements from Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani in his bid against Congressman Dan Goldman.

Lander decided to enter the race for New York’s 10th Congressional District after Goldman opted not to back Mamdani’s mayoral campaign earlier this year. Lander had a significant role in helping Mamdani secure a surprising victory in the Democratic primary last June, utilizing ranked-choice voting to mutually support each other and to rally behind former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

“Brad’s steadfast principles, extensive knowledge, and genuine empathy make him a remarkable leader,” Mamdani commented in a statement. “He has been a reliable ally to me, and I fully support him, knowing he will continue to advocate for those who most require governmental assistance.”

Lander raised some eyebrows by lightly critiquing Goldman for accepting funds from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, implying that it’s odd for someone who critiques “oligarchies” to accept such contributions. In contrast, Goldman’s campaign responded robustly, asserting that their focus remains on active service.

Goldman’s Strategy and Challenges

Goldman has expressed concerns over Mamdani’s potential efficacy in safeguarding Jewish New Yorkers, highlighting a pivotal divide within the Democratic Party. Democrats have grappled with establishing a unified message since their substantial loss in the 2024 elections, but they agree on the need to counter President Donald Trump’s upcoming second-term agenda.

As they prepare for the midterms, the Democratic Party is aiming to retake control in Congress to obstruct Trump’s legislative plans during the final two years of his presidency.

Lander’s campaign is capitalizing on the momentum following Mamdani’s successful mayoral run, positioning him to challenge Goldman from a more progressive angle, particularly regarding issues surrounding the Gaza conflict.

While Goldman is busy securing support in solid Democratic enclaves of New York City, Lander is energetically tackling more left-leaning issues. His previous experiences included a controversial encounter where he was arrested by Homeland Security agents, which has been featured in his campaign videos.

“When ICE agents began targeting my neighbors, I stood up,” Lander asserted. “While our communities are under attack, we must take action to protect them.”

Interestingly, despite his role in Mamdani’s campaign, Lander was unable to secure a prominent position in the new administration. Nevertheless, his extensive collaboration with Mamdani—like joining him on bike rides or attending campaign events—has undoubtedly heightened his profile, allowing him to pivot towards a congressional run.

Amidst this backdrop, fellow Mamdani supporter, New York City Councilman Chi Ose, decided to withdraw from a primary challenge against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries before it truly began, citing a lack of support as a key reason.

In the turbulent landscape of Democratic politics in New York, Lander’s campaign will face significant challenges, but it also benefits from strategic support and recent electoral successes. Stay tuned as the political scenarios unfold.
