Brandon Aiyuk and the 49ers are facing an unexpected split.

Brandon Aiyuk, a wide receiver for the 49ers, seems to be heading for a split with the team, which is quite surprising. This news comes from a report by The Athletic.

It’s been only about 15 months since Aiyuk, 27, signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension with San Francisco. Yet, he hasn’t participated in any games this season, having been placed on the physically unable to perform list back in July due to a knee injury he sustained against the Chiefs last October.

Recently, it was noted that Aiyuk hasn’t been present for team meetings, which has apparently resulted in some frustration from the 49ers regarding his lack of communication.

In light of this situation, the 49ers have decided to void the guaranteed money in Aiyuk’s contract for the 2026 season, citing that he’s not meeting his contractual obligations by missing important team events.

Aiyuk has reportedly indicated to the NFL Players Association that he won’t contest San Francisco’s decision, essentially opening the door for his release at the season’s end.

With this move, San Francisco stands to save a substantial amount by voiding Aiyuk’s guarantees. He was expected to receive nearly $25 million in option bonuses for 2026, along with a base salary of around $1.2 million, a $100,000 workout bonus, and a roster bonus of $750,000 per game.

Throughout his five years with the 49ers, Aiyuk amassed 4,305 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns across 294 receptions. His standout season was in 2023, where he recorded 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, earning a second-team All-Pro nod.

The 49ers currently hold a 7-4 record and are situated in third place within the competitive NFC West, just trailing behind the Rams and Seahawks.
