The ongoing dispute between Brandon Aiyuk and the 49ers unfolded on Monday when a video was posted to TikTok showing a conversation between Aiyuk and Commanders guard Jayden Daniels.
Admittedly, this seems a bit contrived. Even if he was going to have such a private conversation about his contract situation, why would he allow it to be posted to his TikTok account? Sure, this could be a way to pressure the 49ers to do something and move forward with the extension, but it could also jeopardize the progress they’ve made so far.
There’s been a lot of talk about whether Aiyuk will stay with the Niners long-term. He’s playing on his fifth-year option this year, but after selecting Ricky Piersall in the 2024 NFL Draft, it seems the team is willing to part ways with either Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel in the future.
Aiyuk is reportedly seeking a contract in line with what other top receivers have been making, which would put him in the $30-40 million range — not necessarily an unreasonable ask given his recent performance, but it’s unclear whether paying a receiver that much money fits into the 49ers’ philosophy.
Only time will tell how this plays out, but it looks like this mess is only going to get worse.
