The family of Brandon Clark, a forward for the Grizzlies who passed away from an accidental overdose in May, is set to receive the outstanding $12.5 million from his fully insured contract. This sum will be paid out completely through life insurance, as reported by Yahoo Sports.
Mark Bartelstein, Clark’s agent from Priority Sports, commented on the matter, stating, “It was really unfortunate that there was a false report.” He emphasized, “Brandon’s agreement was fully protected against any unforeseen circumstances. So, the family and his estate are well-catered for under this agreement.”
The article pointed out that not all contracts guarantee payments after death. In Clark’s specific case, the remaining $12.5 million corresponds to the four-year, $50 million rookie extension he signed with the Grizzlies.
Bartelstein further remarked, “The Grizzlies have been a wonderful partner in supporting Brandon since he was drafted. The kindness shown by the entire organization towards Brandon’s family during this difficult time has been truly indescribable. We are all incredibly grateful.”
Clark, who was just 29, died from a lethal mix of heroin and cocaine, as confirmed earlier by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. He was discovered unresponsive in his bedroom on May 11.
Reportedly, drug paraphernalia was also found at his residence in California’s San Fernando Valley.
Just six weeks prior to his death, Clark faced legal issues, being arrested for allegedly driving over 100 miles per hour while passing several cars in a no-passing zone. During that incident, police found 235.6 grams of kratom in his vehicle, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by The California Post.
A 2019 draft pick, Clark spent all seven seasons with the Grizzlies but struggled with injuries throughout his career.
He averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, with his untimely passing leading to a sense of loss among family, friends, and the basketball community.
The Grizzlies expressed their sorrow in a statement, saying, “We are heartbroken over the tragic loss of Brandon Clark. He was a remarkable teammate, and his influence on our organization and the Memphis community will always be cherished.”
Clark’s fiancée, Lorraine, shared her grief, stating, “There are no words to express what I’m feeling.”
