Chicago Mayor Urges Gun Control from Trump
Chicago’s mayor, Brandon Johnson, has called on President Donald Trump to advocate for gun control during a press conference on Tuesday.
Trump recently suggested federal law enforcement in Chicago, while also criticizing Johnson for the city’s crime rates. In response, Johnson pointed out that states led by Republicans have a significant “gun problem,” which he believes has contributed to the rise in crime in Chicago.
During the press conference, Johnson stated, “As long as the president allows the trafficking of tens of thousands of guns into our states and cities, we won’t be able to tackle gun violence in Chicago.” He emphasized that most firearms involved in crimes are not sourced from Chicago or even Illinois; rather, many originate from states like Indiana, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
He added that simply increasing police presence would not resolve the issue. Despite the ongoing efforts to curb violence, Johnson stressed that progress is limited until the president takes action against the mass trafficking of firearms. “For every gun the Chicago Police get off the streets, a couple more will replace it,” he explained, connecting ongoing violence to the gun issues in surrounding states.
Current regulations under federal law impose hefty prison sentences on individuals guilty of firearm trafficking. Illinois, in particular, has strict gun laws.
Chicago has recorded the highest murder rates in the country for thirteen consecutive years, with 572 homicides reported in 2024.
The White House did not provide an immediate response to requests for comments.
