Brandon Nimmo waited over a decade for this special Mets clincher

Francisco Lindor is the team's MVP and will likely be captain in the future.

Pete Alonso is a famous slugger who has won the Home Run Derby twice and has become a national figure, and may become the face of the team.

Brandon Nimmo is in many ways the heart of the team, and that heart was tugging at the Mets' euphoric moments Wednesday night at Citi Field.

All as Edwin Diaz hits a fastball that beats Kyle Schwarber, clinching a 4-1 win over the Phillies and clinching the NL Championship for the first time in his nine years in Queens. washed Nemo's heart.

He was a first-round pick out of Wyoming high school in 2011 and helped lead the team to the brink of the World Series 13 years later.

He knows the effort that goes into each game, each season.

All the hard work and all the moments, big and small, culminated in an NLCS trip that brought the Mets' longest-tenured player to tears.

“You always wonder what it would be like to do something that has never been done before,” said a red-eyed Nimmo in a champagne-filled clubhouse. “I always feel like it’s a little outlandish and I don’t understand it at all. What would happen if you actually grabbed it and held onto it?

“When I did that…the feeling that came up for me — I was trying not to worry about it, trying to continue our game, the game is not over, you always get the last out. — and the emotion that poured out on me was: “I can’t believe it.”

The Mets qualified for the playoffs in Atlanta.

For the first time in the stadium's history, the Mets won a playoff series at Citi Field.

“To be able to do it here in Citi Field in front of our fans for the first time is like a dream come true for me and everything I ever wanted when I got drafted,” Nimmo said.

Just as the Mets have survived everything this season, they also survived the Phillies series with maximum performance.

After the fifth inning, they were down 1-0, but Lindor hit a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning.

Edwin Diaz suffered a late disaster, but the Mets brand continued to breathe.

Nimmo was looking to play either the Padres or the Dodgers and didn't care who the Mets were waiting for.

This moment meant a lot, but he's looking for more.

“I think we have the best shot of anyone, we thought that from the beginning,” said Nimmo, whose team will advance to the final four. “This is great, and we're going to sit down and learn…but it's just the next step in the journey, and we're not going to settle here and lie down.

“We're going to go out there and we're going to give it everything we've got.”
