A heroic dog’s quick barking is credited with saving a family from a fire that destroyed their home in Southern California during the early hours.
Fillmore, a 3-year-old German shorthaired pointer, sprang into action around 4:20 a.m. on Wednesday.
The Dallis family was awoken by their dog’s persistent barking in their Tustin home. “We couldn’t get him to stop,” homeowner Eleni Dallis recalled, noting that something felt off. “At first, I thought it was a coyote.”
Shortly after, Eleni noticed a “strong red light” outside and assumed a nearby property was on fire.
However, as she entered the kitchen, the situation became clear: sparks were flying from the ceiling, and flames were already consuming the garage. Eleni hurried to wake her 90-year-old mother, who also lives there, while she and her husband, Tom, grabbed a garden hose to try to tackle the blaze themselves. They managed to contain the fire until firefighters arrived.
“If he hadn’t woken us up, we would have been homeless,” Eleni commented. According to the Los Angeles Times, dogs typically sleep through the night.
The fire caused extensive damage, ruining three cars and two e-bikes in the garage, which Eleni described as “completely unrecognizable.” The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
During the turmoil, Fillmore escaped from an unlocked box and was found shivering in an elderly woman’s bedroom.
Afterward, the brave pup received a warm reception from first responders. “They were all around him,” Eleni said. “He definitely felt the love.”
As a dog trained in obedience since he was a puppy, Fillmore has always been exceptionally intelligent, but this incident solidified his reputation as a lifesaver, according to his family.
A photo shared by the Orange County Fire Department showed Fillmore proudly posing next to firefighters, with many social media users commenting positively, one saying, “Kudos to him.” real MVP
