Puppy Hero Saves Family from Dynamite

A Peruvian dog is being hailed a hero after she discovered a stick of dynamite tossed into her owner’s yard, averting a potential disaster for the entire family. The dog, named Mathes, showcased remarkable bravery by removing the explosive before any harm could be done.

Journalist Carlos Alberto Messias Zarate, the dog’s owner, expressed more amazement at the dog’s actions than at the very threat itself. He brushed off the potentially fatal explosion, calling it just part of “the line of his work.”

The incident, which occurred late one night, was captured on outdoor surveillance. Footage shows a suspect in black clothing hastily tossing the explosive into the yard, though it wasn’t clear if they achieved their goal before making a quick getaway.

Mathes, a sturdy cocker spaniel mix weighing around 25 pounds, reacted instinctively and bolted down the stairs to tackle the situation. It seems she initially grabbed the fuse and, in a stroke of luck, successfully managed to pull the fuse out of the stick. Reports indicate that the dynamite was a type typically used in landmines.

“She bit, bite, bite, and saved our lives,” Zarate shared, speaking about Mathes’ quick actions.

Afterward, Zarate alerted the authorities about the attempted bombing, and the suspects are now in custody. Fortunately, while Mathes displayed incredible bravery, she wasn’t as fortunate—her family emerged unscathed.

Since the incident, Mathes has suffered some damage to her vocal cords, and her once fierce bark is now notably diminished. “I can’t hear her bark now,” Zarate lamented, though Mathes continues to make her presence felt and has gained a bit of celebrity status in the local community.

This incident shines a light on the selflessness of dogs, who often put themselves in harm’s way to protect their human companions. Another dog in Switzerland even saved its owner by bravely crossing a vast valley, showcasing the enduring bond between dogs and their families.
