In a remarkable quest to fulfill a lifelong dream, Malik Al-Sultan, a 28-year-old from Saudi Arabia, embarked on an extraordinary road trip spanning over 5,600 miles to witness the Northern Lights. The journey led him from his home to the snowy landscapes of northern Norway and took nearly a year of meticulous planning.
Choosing to travel by land instead of taking a flight, Al-Sultan aimed to immerse himself in various cultures and experiences along the route. He began his adventure on December 20, 2025, driving a Toyota Land Cruiser pickup truck through Europe and Scandinavia.
The trip lasted three weeks and covered 19 countries, ultimately landing him in Bodø, Norway. Al-Sultan had carefully calculated expenses, totaling about $12,300 for fuel, food, and lodging during the journey. His path included stops in countries like Kuwait, Turkey, Serbia, Italy, Germany, and Sweden.
Interestingly, an unexpected detour brought him to England, where he landed in London for the first time. Initially, visiting the UK wasn’t part of his plan, but upon seeing the stunning scenery, he decided to extend his stay.
After about 5,600 miles, he finally reached Bodø and was treated to the breathtaking sight of the aurora borealis lighting up the sky. Al-Sultan describes the trip as a profound experience, saying, “Traveling through so many different cultures made it all worthwhile.” His astonishment at viewing the Northern Lights was evident: “I was very surprised just looking at them.”
Al-Sultan reflects on the journey, noting that the experiences and the destination are intertwined in his memory. As he plans to return to Saudi Arabia, he hints at potentially choosing a different route, perhaps to create new stories. Observers have expressed admiration for his adventurous spirit, commenting on how they’d love to share tales around a campfire with him.
