Braves appoint bench coach Walt Weiss as their new manager

Walt Weiss Named Manager of Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves announced on Monday that they have appointed Walt Weiss as their new manager. This decision follows the team’s earlier announcement that Brian Snitker would be moving into an advisory role at the conclusion of the regular season.

Weiss, who has been with the Braves for the past eight seasons as their bench coach, is stepping up to this leadership role, reminiscent of how Snitker was promoted nearly a decade ago. At 61, Weiss played a part in the Braves’ journey during the 2021 World Series.

In total, Weiss has been associated with the Braves for 11 seasons: three as a player from 1998 to 2000, where he recorded a batting average of .257 and hit two home runs, and eight years on the coaching staff. He notably made an All-Star appearance in 1998, his only selection during a 14-year playing career, and was recognized as the Rookie of the Year by the Oakland Athletics in 1988.

Interestingly, this isn’t Weiss’s first rodeo as a major league manager. He previously helmed the Colorado Rockies from 2013 to 2016, finishing his time there with a 283-365 record. However, unfortunately, he didn’t lead the team to the playoffs during his stint in Colorado.

Braves’ general manager Alex Anthopoulos is set to provide further insights during a press conference scheduled for Tuesday.

In the broader context, managerial changes in other teams are also happening, with the San Diego Padres and Rockies being the only clubs left searching for new managers after several other moves, including the Texas Rangers hiring Skip Shoemaker and the San Francisco Giants acquiring Tony Vitello.
