Breaking down every way Oklahoma softball has proven to be a dynasty

When we talk about dynasties in college sports, we talk about a few programs: Alabama Football, University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball, Duke University Men’s Basketball.

Now, it’s time to add another dynasty to the group: the University of Oklahoma softball program. Since 2010, the Sooners softball program has arguably been the most successful college sports program in America.

Let’s start with the stats: Since 2010, the Sooners have won seven national championships, including all four of the last. By comparison, Alabama football has four. total UConn men’s basketball has also won in the same span since 2010. In fact, the only major collegiate sports program that can match Oklahoma women’s softball is UConn women’s basketball, which has won five championships since 2010, including three consecutive championships. But that still doesn’t compare to the dominance of Sooner softball. Sooner’s softball program has Too dominantand the Sooners are determined to keep winning. Head coach Patty Gasso has been at the helm of the Sooners for the past 31 years, and the Sooners have been on a recent run unmatched in college sports. Since 2020, the Sooners have won 235 games, 41 of which have come in the postseason. Over the last four years, they have lost as many postseason games as they have won the Women’s College World Championship. They have won 21 WCWS games in that span, which is total dominance from that perspective.

What stands out about Oklahoma softball is its ability to adapt and adjust while still holding the bar high for quality play. Gasso is able to keep Oklahoma at the top, even in an era of name, image and likeness in college sports, an era where roster turnover is almost inevitable. But Oklahoma stays at the top of the sport even as the sport around it changes. The Sooners are always in the transfer portal, and they use every advantage to stay at the top. Topping the list is All-Pac-12 first-team outfielder Abby Dayton, but many more top-class players have come to Norman for the Sooners, including pitcher Kelly Maxwell, who transferred from Oklahoma State last year. The Sooners don’t only get players through the portal, though. The majority of the Sooners’ team is local, and they get top-class freshmen every year. Sports icons like Jocelyn Alou, Riley Boone, and others spent years in Oklahoma’s development program, waiting for their chance to play.

Dr Katie Lever writes: Matt Brown Extra Points About the Sooners softball program and how they maintain their place at the top of the college sports world. One of the ways they achieve this is an offense that beats all of their opponents. They swing for the fences, and when they do, they often hit. In 250 games since 2020, the Sooners have hit 555 home runs. That’s nearly 200 more runs than they’ve allowed in that same period. In 2023, the Sooners softball team dominated scoring against 27 of the 55 opponents they’ve played. That includes every Super Regional opponent they’ve played. This doesn’t mean they’ve beat all the best teams, it means they’ve beat every other team in the sport. There is a gap between Oklahoma and the rest of the college sports world, and as Gasso maintains his place, that gap is only going to get wider.

When Oklahoma moves to the SEC next school year, it will be tough for the Sooners to stay ahead of other sports teams. The SEC is home to some of the best programs in the sport. Final D1 Softball Top 25 PollFive of the top 10 softball teams in the country are in the SEC outside of Oklahoma, and two of those teams are in the top five in Oklahoma too. With the move to the SEC comes an added recruiting challenge as you will always be playing teams near the top of the spending charts when it comes to NIL. But if there’s one thing the sports world has realized over the past decade-plus, it’s that Oklahoma softball will find its way to Omaha and break some home runs and barriers along the way.
