The United States faces an uphill task advancing out of the Copa America group stage after a 2-1 loss to Panama on Thursday night in Atlanta.
Below are scenarios in which the U.S. could advance to the quarterfinals as one of the top two teams from Group C.
— The United States will have to beat 15-time Copa champion Uruguay on Monday in Kansas City, Mo., if Panama beats Bolivia in a match played at the same time in Orlando, Fla. Bolivia has lost 14 straight Copa matches since a 5-0 loss to Uruguay on Thursday.
— If Panama and Bolivia also draw and the U.S. has a better goal differential than Panama, the U.S. can advance to the knockout stage with a draw with Uruguay.
If Bolivia beats Panama, the United States could advance with a draw.
— If Bolivia beats Panama and the U.S. has a better goal differential than both Panama and Bolivia, the U.S. could advance to the knockout stage even if it loses to Uruguay.
After Thursday’s games, the United States is plus-1, Panama is minus-1 and Bolivia is plus-7.
