Breanna Stewart understands the key to winning

This article is part of a series profiling the 2025 WNBA All-Star Team. Today, we focus on Breanna Stewart.

What’s left for someone with four NCAA titles, three WNBA championships, Olympic golds, a World Championship, a Euroleague title, and two WNBA MVP awards? Not much, it seems—why stop there? Breanna Stewart shows no signs of slowing down, and it’s even more special now that her children, Ruby and Theo, can witness their mother’s greatness.

When she left Seattle, Stewart had already won two championships with the Storm after being the first pick in the 2016 WNBA draft. Her goal now is to bring the New York Liberty their first franchise championship, a task she is tackling with the help of players like Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu. Yet, she understands that one title isn’t enough to prove a franchise’s dominance; they’ve got to aim for more.

If anyone can lead New York to consecutive championships, it’s Stewart. She already accomplished an impressive feat by winning four straight NCAA championships with UConn. Throughout her career, she has succeeded across various leagues and continents in different levels of basketball.

So, how does she win so consistently? It’s her versatility on the court. Stewart was among the pioneers of dynamic forwards capable of doing everything on the court, though she particularly excels close to the basket. One of her signature moves is a pull-up three-pointer in transition, catching defenders off guard if they’re a bit late to react. She can play any position, grab rebounds, steal the ball, and defend, enabling teammates like Jonquel Jones to operate effectively, which makes New York a formidable offensive team.

Off the court, she’s also paving the way: in 2022, Stewart became the first female basketball player to have a signature shoe launch with Puma after a long hiatus in the basketball shoe market. Since then, several new styles have been introduced. Her success has opened doors for other women’s basketball players, leading to signature shoes for teammates like Sabrina Ionescu, A’ja Wilson, and Angel Reese. Even Caitlin Clark and JuJu Watkins have signature shoes set to release next year.

These milestones are significant as Stewart positively impacts women’s basketball off the court, but all her focus is needed to help Liberty clinch that back-to-back championship. Though New York started strong with a 9-0 record, they’ve hit a rough patch recently, especially with Jonquel Jones sidelined by an ankle injury. While she’s expected to return soon, it’s up to Stewart to reassure her team amidst a tough stretch where they’ve lost six of their last eleven games.

She’s certainly trying her best. Currently an All-Star in the WNBA, Stewart averages 19.7 points per game. While her three-point shooting isn’t at its peak this season, she compensates with 6.8 average field goals. Her 3.7 win share value places her in the league’s 98th percentile, indicating she is contributing significantly to her team’s success.

Things may not be going exactly as planned this year, but with Stewart at the helm, the team is still in a solid position. She knows how to win, how to inspire her teammates, and what her group needs in crucial moments. She has evolved from a young college star into a well-respected leader on and off the court, yet her winning mentality remains unchanged.
